Getting Away To Greenland

Of the two places we looked at this week Greenland doesn’t really seem that remote. Just sit back and think for a second, when was the last time anyone talked about vacationing to Greenland? I was immediately turned away from Greenland when Emilio Estevez discovered that the country was actually covered in ice during D2: The Mighty Ducks. I think Iceland gets the travel nod more than Greenland and that is why today we are covering Greenland.

Flying to this destination isn’t near as difficult as getting into Bhutan or Nauru. There are several flights that get into Greenland from Denmark. This ease of travel may turn some of you off since this might not seem as a truly remote location. The truth is Greenland is far more remote in terms of tourists. The tourism statistics are so low that they were near impossible to find on the internet.

With all this being said Greenland has a ton of options for escaping into the outdoors. Of all the places we have covered this week, Greenland actually has a pretty great tourism website. There are multiple things listed under outdoor activities. A few of my favorites were dogsledding, hiking, kayaking, and snowmobiling. There are also a ton of nature specific things you can do in Greenland. A few of my favorites under that section were whale watching, Northern Lights, and the Midnight Sun.

I have hiked in Iceland and it was truly beautiful. From the pictures on the website, it looks like true fans of nature need to explore this place. Here is an excerpt from their website: “Greenland is the last frontier where robust nature reigns most powerful. The expansive backcountry literally knocks at the back door, and urban sprawl has not plagued these pristine mountains and lakes. Greenlanders often say that even though we build our homes next to the nature – and there is plenty of life and vibrancy in the town limits – our hearts are always happiest in the great outdoors.” This a place you need to visit if you want to experience nature that hasn’t been touched by human hands.
