Great Smoky Mountains Half Marathon

Great Smoky Mountains Half Marathon

Good morning Trail Climb Nation. Here in Oklahoma we have had amazing weather the last week. For most of the week we have seen 70 degree weather. That has been great for someone like me. Recently I have taken up running again and I have to say I really missed it. It is great to just get out, put on some Red Hot Chili Peppers, and just go. Today was a different story. The 70 degree weather turned to 40 degrees and every step was just painful. This got me looking forward to warm weather and some amazing races through our National Parks.

Great Smoky Mountains Half Marathon is a race located in Tennessee at, you guessed it, Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This race is put on by the same people who did the Rocky Mountain National Park Half Marathon I wrote about last year. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is actually the most visited National Park in the U.S. Start time for this race begins at 7:30 and this gives you a glimpse at how the park got its name. At this time of day the park is covered in immense fog. I think that is a great yet eerie way to begin a half marathon. This is a great race to take in the beauty of nature with minimal elevation gain. The whole race only takes you 364 feet up.

Another great thing about this race is the push to get outdoors. After finishing the race you have 72 hours to climb Chimney Tops Trail. This is a little more of a doozy. On this trail you will gain 1,487 feet. However, once you get to the top just take a picture of yourself, your finisher medal, and your racing bib and receive 50% off your registration for next years race. Time to start hitting the trails!
