Why Do You Need a Hiking Permit?

Why Do You Need a Hiking Permit?

I was thinking the other day about how free one can feel while being lost in the wilderness. I thought about all of the trips I have taken this year. I had the pleasure of seeing Colorado, Washington, Banff, Montana, and Iceland. It was a year that I won’t soon forget. My whole life I have been a homebody. After my camping trip I realized how important it is to travel and see the world. Somewhere in this line of thinking I got hooked on hiking permits. Why do I need a hiking permit? Is this just the man trying to make money off of the glorious outdoors? Immediately my mind switched from happy relaxing thoughts to dealing with this injustice of the hiking permit. I did what any person who doesn’t want to call an expert and find out the real answer, I took to the internet.

Information was pretty scarce when I did my web search. Most of the information brought up hiking permits related to certain parks. One website I found gave three very good explanations for needing a hiking permit. The three explanations they gave were to preserve, to protect, and to educate. After I read more on this the concept of a hiking permit makes sense. While in Iceland one thing that shocked me was having to pay to use the restroom. It was a completely foreign concept for my wife and I. I have read about the pay for public toilets in England and studies have shown that the toilets are much cleaner (I would hate to be that research team). The concept is if people have to pay to use the bathroom they will take better care of it. Now apply that to the outdoors. If you have to pay $8 to hike an area you will most likely treat that area with respect. When it comes to protecting the outdoors the hiking permit also makes sense. By selling permits, you can limit the amount of people going into an area and thus protecting it. When it comes to educating I was a little baffled. However, this is a great chance for land managers to educate people on the area they intend to hike. Someone like myself would love this because having first hand knowledge from a land manager could be very useful information.

Hopefully this helped educate a few people on the purpose of the hiking permit. I guess they aren’t so bad after all.
